Environmental Campaigns

This year is a very important year for shaping the future of our planet. In response there is a new wave of organisations taking a huge leap of faith and setting up as collaborative businesses to inspire and enable people, businesses and the public sector to dramatically cut their carbon emissions and fossil fuel use. The following organisations are all social networking and collaborative businesses trying to achieve the same thing - making people aware they can all make a difference

As individual businesses we are making big things are happening, but together we are making a massive impact. We urge you to discover what we do and take part in our enterprising activities;

Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centres - www.bricksandbread.com - Trudy Thompson was a motorsport professional from Surrey who changed her life seven years ago to become a pioneer in eco building. Trudy created Bricks and Bread to address the issues she faced in trying to find the information and products to adapt her life to be more self sufficient and be able to build truly sustainable homes.

About the company
Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centres is a community interest company established in Aldershot, Hampshire. It is a hub for experts who passionately believe it is vital that they share their knowledge and make it accessible to everyone. The Centre makes it easy for people and businesses to be able to adapt their lives and reduce their environmental impact.

Beyond helping people gain awareness we provide the solutions and products they need. We are dedicated to running a sustainable business that benefits communities by providing expert advice, skills training and verified products to help people live, work and build sustainably.

350.org - www.350.org is an international campaign dedicated to encouraging a global climate treaty that lowers carbon dioxide below 350 parts per million. Leading scientists agree this is the safe upper limit for CO2 as in our atmosphere. Current levels are already at 390ppm!

October 24th is The International Day of Climate Action being promoted by 350.org. People all over the world are running events at thousands of places around the world to draw attention to the need for a dramatic international agreement to reduce carbon emissions and set us on a rapid path to 350. As six weeks from now governments are meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark for the United Nations Climate Change Conference to create a new climate treaty.

What are we doing to support 350.org? We are holding our own event on the 24th of October at Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centre - To raise awareness about greenhouse gases like carbon dioxide and providing solutions to help people and businesses reduce their carbon emissions.

10:10 campaign - www.1010uk.org we encourage everyone to pledge their support to the 10:10 campaign and committing to cut their emissions by 10% in 2010. By doing this you can join thousands of individuals, schools, hospitals, businesses and organisations actively trying to combat climate change by making simple changes to their lifestyles, homes and workplaces.

More importantly, your voice will help to put pressure on the politicians to cut Britain’s emissions as quickly as the science demands. If we in the UK can prove that fast, deep cuts can be made at a national level, then we may inspire all the other big polluting countries to follow suit.

What are we doing to support the 10:10 campaign? Even though we are a zero carbon business Bricks and Bread Sustainable Living Centre has signed up to this campaign to support it and commitment to keep our carbon emissions low even though we are a rapidly growing business. We help people and businesses who join the campaign to undertake the steps they need to reduce their carbon emissions by providing the advice, training and products to help them adapt.

The Greening Campaign - www.greening-campaign.co.uk - was set up in response to the threat of global warming. It helps motivate people to reduce their energy consumption and therefore lower their personal and community carbon footprint. The campaign is the brain child of Terena Plowright, who is a resident of Petersfield, Hampshire who wanted to make a difference.

The campaign has been so successful it has adopted by other local communities. It is now operates across the South East region, with enquires coming from across the country. The Greening Campaign is fun, structured, and makes fighting climate change visible in your community. The Greening Campaign joins individuals, groups, councils, schools and government together in a joint programme that is simple and very effective.

How does it work?
Households are encouraged to take a branded information card, which gives them a list of ways to save energy in the home and at work. They undertake to put into action a set number of these ideas and display the card in a front window. The next step of the campaign is to evaluate its success which is done by a combination of public surveys and card counts. From this information the annual CO2 cut for the community can be estimated and reported in the local paper. For Petersfield the saving was an amazing 23 tons of carbon dioxide

What are we doing to support the Greening Campaign?
We are going to coordinate a community campaign in Aldershot and support local people and businesses in the town to reduce their co2 by using our centre as a hub for advice, training and products.
