At Bricks and Bread we support a lot of small businesses so we thought it would be helpful if we hosted a regular lunchtime and evening networking sessions at an informal venue where you can also work together for the afternoon.

The lovely people who run the Britannia (a great pub by the river with nice food) have reserved us an area where we can sit, chat and connect to free wifi. During the afternoon session you can get some work done with other young entrepreneurs, talk about how you can share resources, help you overcome any issues and collaborate in business opportunities.

Trudy Thompson the Founder of Bricks and Bread will be available for a chat if you want a one-to-one mentoring session with her or if you want to apply for a start-up loan (up to £10,000) from us we can talk through your idea, help you write a business plan and make the application for you during the session.

All the sessions are free and you can book all three, if you reserve your place we will provide refreshments/food. You are welcome to turn up without first reserving your place, but you will have to pay for your food/refreshments.

Every evening between 6pm – 7pm small business startups can book a 30 minute free advice session with Trudy Thompson the Founder of Bricks and Bread.

There are two sessions available at 6pm and 6.30pm
- the 6pm session is only for young entrepreneurs (aged 18-30)
- the 6.30pm session is open for anyone 18+

It doesn’t matter what stage your business is at as these sessions are useful for giving a fresh perspective to people with just a business idea, an early stage startup or an established venture that has been running for years.

This is a very informal quick chat by phone or Skype with an experienced entrepreneur and business mentor who will listen to what you want help with and then will share her experience, pointing you in the direction of a possible solution or putting you in touch with someone who can help from her network of business contacts.

Your conversation will be completely confidential, whatever you tell her will not be discussed with anyone else without your permission.

During the hangout Josh leads the discussion and starts by inviting everyone to introduce themselves and say a little about what their business does, then the group has an open discussion about the challenges they have faced in the last week, any issues they have dealt with and successful things that have happened. Following this they have a general discussion about business, latest news and anything that might help them progress.

Josh Taylor sends out an invite to every young person who has had a mentoring session with Bricks and Bread. But anyone who is aged 18-30 who is starting and running their own business can request an invite by sending a tweet to @joshingtalk, or email him.

Last year Josh Taylor was supported by us to turn his hobby into a successful business, this year he is also working with us as a mentor to share his experiences with the young people we support this year.

This year we aim to support up to 4,000 young people, they will benefit from being able to access our business incubation services for free, to help them create their own business.

What have you found the most useful about the free advice session with Trudy?

It was great to have someone who understood my thinking and who gave me the confidence to turn my hobby into a business. I also found it inspiring to see and meet others in the same situation through Trudy’s network.

Why have you and Trudy teamed up to provide support for other young entrepreneurs?

I’m lucky enough to have had the time to learn how Trudy works in business and have found that I use similar techniques based on her Change to Save methods. We decided that we would like to offer our support to more people and it was important to me, that this support was shared with young entrepreneurs. Having experienced it myself, I know how valuable the support is and now act as a bridge between young people and Trudy. What have you found the most useful about the free advice session with Trudy?

I was really stuck before I talked with Trudy, in this way of living I always deal with uncertainty, and Trudy was helpful by
suggesting creative solutions to my situation, and by motivating me to move forward while assuring me that I am still in the right direction.

From your experience, what advice would you give other young entrepreneurs?

Well, if you are stressed, need advice, or have a problem anytime just don’t be afraid to tell people about it (especially Trudy), people will help you relieve the stress and will in most cases redirect you to people who could help you, as Trudy and Josh said: “You are always only one or two people from the person you need to talk to”.

Hello, I’m Charlotte, I am a Photographer currently being mentored by Trudy. I am at the beginning of my journey and with help from Bricks and Bread and Start-Up Loans I have recently taken the leap to turn my passion for photography into my full time career.

I have always loved taking photos of people; capturing an emotion or somehow catching a kind of essence of the person I’m photographing, and, although I am primarily a portrait photographer, I am looking forward to exploring all aspects of photography. Becoming my own boss whilst doing what I love is an exciting move.

Having someone believe in what I’m doing is fantastic and has massively boosted my confidence. I wasn’t sure I could take the next step to make photography a full time career and I didn’t really know how to go about it. For me the start-up loan has made a massive difference to growing my business. Unfortunately, photography is not easy to do without the right equiptment. I have been able to set myself up and once I get to grips with my very exciting new kit I will be ready to take on any jobs that come my way.
